Advanced Vascular Surgery

Surgeon, surgical doctor, anesthetist or anesthesiologist holding patient's hand for health care trust and support in professional surgical operation, medical anesthetic safety, healthcare conceptFor patients whose vascular condition is at a more advanced stage, minimally-invasive endovascular surgery may not be appropriate. Traditional vascular surgery is performed with a larger incision, allowing the surgeon better access to the treatment area.

Every patient referred to Deborah for a vascular condition undergoes a thorough screening to assess his or her health status and the progression of the condition. While our first priority is to address the patient’s condition with medication and/or a diet and exercise program, some patients will require surgical intervention. Our surgical teams recommend endovascular procedures whenever appropriate because they are less invasive.

Vascular surgery may be recommended for any of the following:

  • Carotid endarterectomy
  • Lower extremity revascularization
  • Dialysis access surgery
  • Distal bypass surgery of lower extremities
  • Thoracic stent graft repair of thoracic aortic aneurysm

Why Deborah?

  • The vascular surgery team at Deborah is regionally renowned in limb salvage procedures.
  • Deborah Heart and Lung Center’s Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory has been granted a three-year term of accreditation in Vascular Testing – in the areas of Extracranial Cerebrovascular Testing, Peripheral Venous Testing, and Peripheral Arterial Testing – by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC).
  • Through its fellowship program, Deborah is training a new generation of vascular surgeons. The vascular surgery fellowship program builds upon the core education of general surgery to provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to develop proficiency and surgical judgment in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the arterial, venous, and lymphatic circulatory systems. Fellows are trained in both open and endovascular approaches to vascular disease and bring highly talented resources to the vascular surgery program.

Do Your Legs Hurt?

In the United States, more than 18 million Americans suffer from Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) which is the hardening of the arteries — also known as “atherosclerosis” — in the limbs, often the legs. Approximately 20 percent of individuals over the age of 60 have PAD, and many of those with PAD do not experience any symptoms, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Peripheral Artery Disease can reduce mobility and increase the risk for heart attack and stroke. If left untreated, PAD can be fatal.

Because vascular disease develops over time, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle through awareness, prevention and risk reduction.
