Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom Disease, is a neurological condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs. The sensation is often described as aching, tingling, crawling, pulling, or throbbing and typically occurs when a person is resting, especially in the evening or at night.
The condition may occur on its own or be associated with other health issues, including iron deficiency, kidney disease, diabetes, pregnancy, or certain neurological disorders. In some cases, a family history may increase the likelihood of developing RLS.
Because symptoms often worsen during periods of inactivity and improve with movement, RLS can interfere with sleep, daily activities, and overall quality of life. Many people experience symptoms that make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep, which can lead to daytime fatigue and reduced quality of life.
Common signs and symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome include:
In some cases, symptoms may also affect the arms or other parts of the body.
There is no single test for Restless Leg Syndrome. Diagnosis is typically based on a patient’s symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination. Your Deborah Heart and Lung Center provider will evaluate when symptoms occur, what triggers them, and whether movement provides relief.
Additional testing may be recommended to identify underlying conditions that can contribute to RLS. Blood tests may be used to check iron levels and screen for other medical concerns. Depending on your symptoms, your provider may also evaluate for sleep disorders or other neurological conditions that can cause similar symptoms.
An accurate diagnosis is important because treatment often focuses on both symptom management and addressing any underlying health issues that may be contributing to the condition.
By participating in this quiz, or screening or health assessment, I recognize and accept all risks associated with it. I understand that the program will only screen for certain risk factors and does not constitute a complete physical exam. For the diagnosis of a medical problem, I must see a physician for a complete medical exam. I release Deborah Heart and Lung Center and any other organization(s) involved in this screening, and their employees and agents, from all liabilities, medical claims or expenses which may arise from my participation. Thank you for investing in your health by participating today.
