Revascularization

Revascularization is a procedure used to restore healthy blood flow to areas of the body affected by narrowed or blocked arteries. It is commonly recommended for patients with chronic wounds, peripheral artery disease (PAD), diabetic foot ulcers, or circulation issues that are preventing wounds from healing properly. Improving circulation helps deliver oxygen and nutrients needed for tissue repair and healing.

How does it work?

Revascularization works by opening blocked blood vessels or creating a new pathway for blood flow around the blockage. Depending on the patient’s condition, treatment may involve minimally invasive techniques such as angioplasty and stenting, or surgical bypass procedures. By restoring circulation, revascularization can reduce pain, support wound healing, and help lower the risk of infection or amputation.

Am I a good candidate for treatment?

You may be a candidate for revascularization if you have:

  • Poor circulation
  • Non-healing wounds
  • Leg pain while walking
  • Diabetic ulcers
  • Signs of peripheral artery disease

Patients experiencing slow wound healing due to reduced blood flow may benefit from a vascular evaluation to determine if revascularization is appropriate. Your care team will review your medical history, symptoms, and diagnostic imaging to develop the best treatment plan for you.

What can I expect after treatment?

Before treatment, patients typically undergo vascular testing or imaging studies to evaluate blood flow and identify blockages. Many revascularization procedures are minimally invasive and performed with small incisions and shorter recovery times compared to traditional surgery.

Following treatment, patients may experience improved circulation, reduced pain, and better wound healing outcomes. Ongoing follow-up care and wound management may also be recommended.
