Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium channel blockers are medications used to treat high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), and certain heart rhythm disorders. By helping blood vessels relax and improving blood flow, these medications can reduce strain on the heart and lower the risk of cardiovascular complications.

Depending on the condition being treated, calcium channel blockers may be used alone or in combination with other heart medications.

How does it work?

Calcium plays an important role in the contraction of the heart and blood vessel walls. Calcium channel blockers limit the movement of calcium into these cells, causing blood vessels to relax and widen.

As blood vessels become less constricted, blood pressure decreases and the heart can pump more efficiently. Some calcium channel blockers can also help slow the heart rate and control certain abnormal heart rhythms.

Am I a good candidate for treatment?

Calcium channel blockers may be recommended if you have:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Angina (chest pain)
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Certain arrhythmias
  • Raynaud’s phenomenon

Your provider will evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and cardiovascular health to determine whether a calcium channel blocker is appropriate for your condition.

What can I expect after treatment?

Most calcium channel blockers are taken as a daily oral medication. Your provider may adjust your dosage over time to achieve the desired effect while minimizing side effects.

Regular follow-up visits may be recommended to monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, and overall response to treatment. When taken as prescribed, calcium channel blockers can be an effective way to manage symptoms, improve blood flow, and support long-term cardiovascular health.
