What is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)?

James Herrington
James Herrington, MD

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) occurs when plaque clogs arteries and reduces blood flow to the legs. It may cause pain, weakness or cramping in the legs. The risk of having PAD increases with age. You may be at risk for PAD if you smoke, have diabetes, have high blood pressure, or have abnormal cholesterol levels. PAD can reduce mobility and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Peripheral Artery Disease develops over time and can be treated.
