Joseph Costic, DO, Named New Attending Thoracic Surgeon at Deborah

Joseph Costic, DO

Deborah Heart and Lung Center, a specialty heart, lung, and vascular hospital in Browns Mills, Burlington County has named Joseph Costic, DO, as new Attending Thoracic Surgeon.

Dr. Costic joins Deborah from Hahnemann University Hospital, where he served as an Attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Medical Director for the Cardiothoracic Care Unit, and Surgical Director of the ECMO Program.

He received his medical degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine; completed his general surgery residency at Michigan Health Center; and his thoracic cardiovascular surgery fellowship at Deborah in 1994, after which he joined Deborah’s staff. Dr. Costic has also had previous affiliations with St. Francis Medical Center, the University Medical Center at Princeton, Capital Health System, and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Board certified in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic-Vascular Surgery, Dr. Costic holds licensure in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. He has received numerous awards and citations, and is a member of many professional organizations including the American Osteopathic Association, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American Medical Association.

Well respected in the field, Dr. Costic has served on numerous hospital committees focused on quality, safety, and policies. As well he has been widely published in journals including Surgical Rounds, The American Surgeon, and The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He has also presented at many professional
symposia including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, The American Heart Association Scientific Sessions, and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Costic will bring a wide range of highly-specialized surgical skills to his new position, including VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery), which is a minimally invasive approach to complex lung
surgery; surgical lung resection; and lobe removal. As well he will be doing a variety of esophageal procedures currently unavailable in the area.

A Mt. Laurel resident, Dr. Costic is married with 3 children. In his free time, he enjoys biking, running and gardening.

The appointment is effective immediately.
