A Guide to Finding Active Things to Do Near You

A Guide to Finding Active Things to Do Near You

It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy activities outdoors wherever you live. Not only are most local events fun, but they’re usually a great way to get moving. Instead of sitting on the couch or your favorite lounge chair, special events and community activities will often have you on your feet, walking, exploring, running or doing other types of physical exercise.

So how do you find interesting things to do that will keep you moving and having a good time?

Here are a few ways to get the low-down about what’s going on in your neck of the woods:

  • Check social media – Most communities have social media pages that share information about all types of activities going on in the area. From fundraising walks and 5Ks to street festivals and farmers markets, you’re sure to find enticing reasons to spend time outdoors by checking neighborhood social media accounts or following organizations that put on the type of events you enjoy attending.
  • Read local publications – Many local newspapers and magazines promote events, such as fairs, festivals, exhibits, parades, carnivals, music events, walks/runs and more. Community newsletters are also a good place to look to see what’s going on. If you have school-aged children, you may read about upcoming events in school publications or announcements.
  • Explore event apps – If you’re looking for something specific to do, such as going bird-watching or joining a group yoga class in the park, check out apps that post local events. There’s usually lots going on and these apps are a great way to find them. If you want to start an event or meet up with people who may have similar interests as you, the apps can help with that, too.
  • Ask friends and neighbors – Another great way to discover fun outings is to talk to people in your community. People have different interests and may be tapped into different types of organizations and activities so you might find something to do that you never would have thought of if someone else hadn’t mentioned it.
  • Take a ride around town – Sometimes all you need to do is leave your house to find a new place to explore or an interesting event to immerse yourself in. Get in your car and see what’s going on in the area. If you live in an area where things are easily accessible by bicycle or foot, you’ll get some fresh air and exercise while you pedal or stroll and may find something fun to do in the process.

Spending time outdoors is good for your physical and mental health. Being physically active also offers a host of health benefits and most outdoor activities will keep you moving. So take some time to explore what’s around you – then go out and have a good time!
