Fifty years ago today, I had open heart surgery at Deborah Hospital. The surgeon, Dr. A., was from Brazil and used the new heart-lung machine. There was no pediatric wing, so children were in regular rooms. Once strong enough, we staged races in those old high-backed wooden wheelchairs! My mother was permitted to stay with me the entire time, receiving her meals at the hospital and sleeping in the nurses’ quarters. I had amazing care through the surgery, and great follow up for all of the years into adulthood. Because of Deborah, I have lived a wonderful, normal life. So thank you, Deborah Hospital, for granting me my future!
