Understanding AFib and Stroke

J Krathen SS
Interventional Cardiologist Muhammad Raza, MD

Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, affects the upper chambers of the heart (the atria), and leads to an irregular heartbeat. People with AFib are at increased risk for stroke, as blood can pool in the left atrial appendage causing a clot. The clot may then move through the body and to the brain blocking blood flow and causing a stroke. Learn more about atrial fibrillation and stroke from interventional cardiologist Muhammad Raza, MD on the Hurley in the Morning radio show. He discusses AFib risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis and treatments. AFib treatments include left atrial appendage occlusion devices (LAAO) such as the Watchman™ and Amulet™ implants that  work to prevent clots that may form in the left atrial appendage and enter the bloodstream.

Find out if you’re risk at for AFib by taking our online risk assessment.
