Congratulations, Mr. Varava–you truly deserve this “Vapotherm Patient of the Year” celebratory award!
Congratulations to Pulmonary Rehab patient Alexander Varava of Columbus, NJ, who just won the “Patient of the Year” celebration story, awarded by Vapotherm. Mr. Varava was nominated for the award by Dr. Michael Nolledo, John Hill, and Deborah’s team of respiratory therapists. At 77, Mr. Varava overcame severe obstacles from pulmonary arterial hypertension and interstitial lung disease with progressively worsening hypoxia, which continued to accelerate with exertion
When he first arrived at Deborah, Mr. Varava used a non-rebreather mask and another nasal cannula underneath the mask. From June of 2013 until August of 2014—when Mr. Varava started on Vapotherm, a new high-flow approach to pulmonary rehabilitation—he was on 6-lpm of oxygen with low pulse ox readings. But when Mr. Varava switched to Vapotherm, he was able to begin a 3-times-a-week exercise and therapy regimen within Deborah’s Outpatient Pulmonary Rehab Program, which by September of 2015 enabled him to climb 80 stairs, do a 30-minute cycle on the treadmill, and complete a 1-hour exercise class. Vapotherm has enabled Mr. Varava to enjoy a better quality of life with his high-flow oxygen demands.
